Family Depends On It

Authors Note: I choose to write this essay on "Confessions of the Sullivan Sister's" because it was a very intriguing book. It kept me reading and wanting to read more of it, so I choose to write about how much I think other people would enjoy it.

Your grandma is inconsiderate and parsimonious. Almost everyone thinks that you and your sisters are spoiled, stuck - up jerks. You live in a mansion and are rich to the bone. All of this may sound great to anyone but Norrie, Jane, and Sassy Sullivan. They blame their grandma, Louisa Beckendorf, otherwise known as Almighty. But their entire family’s’ life depends on her. She does something completely unexpected, and blames it on the Sullivan family. “Confessions of the Sullivan sisters” written by Natalie Standiford, is a mystical book because of its unpredictable twists and turns.

Christmas Day is supposed to be full of joy and happiness. When Almighty comes to town, everything turns into chaos. She announces to the Sullivan family, that she will die in six months. This isn't really an everyday Christmas present. This doesn’t sound too bad until she says that she is cutting the family out of the will. She says one of her grandchildren has offended her deeply. She doesn’t say who it is, and expects to have letters of confession written to her by New Years Day. Everyone expects it was one of the three girls. When you read this book, you never know who does what.

All of the unexpected turns are a big factor in this book, but you always have to learn from your mistakes and tell the truth. Norrie wrote her confession first. She ran away to New York, with her true love Robinson Pepper, otherwise known as Robbie. Almighty was infuriated, since she ran off during the middle of the Cotillon. Norrie was only doing it since she was truly in love, which is one of the greatest lessons in this book. Jane went next, as always, for being the middle Sullivan sister. She swore it was her, since she is in fact the most rebellious of the family. She gets suspended from school and has her own blog, called myevilfamily.com. This blog reveals all of their family’s “secrets” and is nothing but the “truth.” This is also a lesson, because you should never do anything against what your family says you should do.  Sassy writes hers last, since she is in fact the youngest of the three. She has confessed that she has murdered someone that Almighty was very close with. Nobody expects it, since Sassy is the sweetest, most innocent child of the family. You will always learn a lesson from your mistakes.

You learn lessons from what you do wrong, but in "Confessions of the Sullivan Sisters" your family can do things that you might not necessarily agree with. Each confession had been submitted to Almighty on New Year’s Day, and she was revealing the person who had offended her the most. Everyone was nervous on that day, and had no idea what was to come. Almighty can do some very strange and unexpected things. She chooses the person that no one would ever think to blame. Almighty did not make a very wise decision. When it comes to family, you always have to remember to respect your elders.

A mystical book that has many unique unpredictable twists and turns and is written by Natalie Standiford is “Confessions of the Sullivan sisters.” This book is very realistic, and could happen to anyone that is living and breathing on this planet. Think about what you do before you do it, but always remember to follow what your heart tells you.

Live and Love

Authors Note: I chose to write my literary analysis on this book because it is written so well by Jodi Picoult. I love this book because of how real the situations seem. It is a great book and I suggest that everyone should give "My Sister's Keeper" a chance.

People are talking behind your back about you and your sister. She’s the one that got sick; people treat you as if you’re an alien from another planet. This is how Anna Fitzgerald feels in “My Sister’s Keeper” by Jodi Picoult. Her sister Kate has had Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia since she was diagnosed with it when she was 5 years old. The Fitzgerald family goes through chaotic family issues, and in the end something completely unexpected happens. “My Sister’s Keeper” teaches great lessons about standing up for yourself and loving your family.

“My Sister’s Keeper” is like the book that describes life. The definition of life is the general condition of human existence; but Jodi Picoult describes this meaning in a fictional way. Sara and Brian Fitzgerald had 3 kids: Their 19 year old son, Jesse, who lives above their garage and is an alcoholic. Their 16 year old Kate who was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) when she was 5 years old, but still tries to live a normal life. Lastly, their youngest 13 year old daughter Anna, who was only born to save Kate’s life, and tries to pretend like nothing ever happened. Throughout the book, the entire family makes dramatic changes in their lifestyle. Things happen that weren’t supposed to happen.

Before the Fitzgerald family makes some changes in their life, Anna decides to finally stand up for herself. She files medical emancipation against her parents; this means that her parents are making medical decisions for her without consulting with her first. To officially file this, she goes to a lawyer, Campbell Alexander. At first he thinks that she is too young, but then he follows through with it, and finds out more about family than he imagined. All of the problems that Anna was having are eventually solved, but not in the way that she was planning.

Just because Anna filed medical emancipation against her parents, does not mean she doesn’t love them. Throughout the book “My Sister’s Keeper”, Sara and Brian Fitzgerald thought that their daughter didn’t love them anymore. Anna still loved them just as much as she did before, when their life wasn’t as chaotic. She just didn’t believe that what they were doing was the best option for Anna’s life. If her parents didn’t love her, and she didn’t love them back, then she would have no one to call family. This lesson is one that everyone that reads this book should learn.

A book that teaches great lessons about loving your family and standing up for yourself is “My Sister’s Keeper.” Jodi Picoult may have written a fictional book, but it might as well be a true story. Take these lessons and tips about life and actually use them. It may just help you in the long run.

  1. For your essay the "Family Depends On It" I really like you essay. There are quirks that I think could be changed, but that is my opinion. I think in some areas of your essay, you may repeat things. But not as much,if you read it to yourself. I think that if anyone were to look at word for word, you'd figure out that there are somethings that seem like they are repeating. But, other than that, I really LOVE your essay and I think that this is the best one you have done.
